Im have been in and my friends are in the restaurant business and are huge foodies and wine buffs. The food at the American Hotel is absolutely amazing. I went on a Tuesday and saw their $1 Oyster special and had 2doz myself. All apps & entrees were incredible and the desert was phenomenal as well. I'm sober but my friends order 2 bottles of fantastic wine also at a very very reasonable price. 5 star all around because the service was impeccable on all ends.

My visit is based off of a bar visit only! I have a book about touring the Hamptons and and there when I have time I go through the book and pick out some stuff to check out that the book recommends. The American Hotel bar was one of the places to visit. I walked in and the atmosphere was quiet when I went in and spotted the bar pretty easily. I sat down and had one on one service from the bartender since I was the only one there. I don't drink alcohol anymore but recently I have been having non alcoholic beers here and there and the bartender had one in stock so he poured me a non alcoholic beer. It cost me $15 including leaving a decent size tip for a drink since I normally tip $1 a drink when I go out. It's a more swankier place so I expected a higher price. The bar seems to have a good selection for alcohol drinking people and if there were more people there it might have been a more fun atmosphere, for me it was more of a relaxing, take a few minutes to get myself together atmosphere which I appreciated. Maybe one day if I've got more money I'll spend the night as a guest in this hotel.

As a tourist to the US, we had been staying in Connecticut and decided to have a trip to Long Island and to stay in Sag Harbor. Travelling over by as many ferries as possible (along the North Fork, we passed many rows of grapes and wineries which was a great help (see later).|Having settled on Sag Harbor, The American Hotel was an obvious choice (late November may not be an ideal place for a waterfront hotel) so it was with curiosity we ventured into Reception which was located behind a display cabinet of cigars and in a comfortable lounge atmosphere. This gave us a sense of what to expect and, having checked into our room, (a tad chilly until the heat kicked in - this was late November) we were able to relax and savour the atmosphere of the hotel.|Dinner was in a delightfully atmospheric setting and very interesting as this was an 'all you can eat' lobster evening. The appetiser and dessert showed the culinary talent in the kitchen, but the industrial catering required to produce dozens of lobsters meant they sadly lacked flavour.|The wine list was a tour de force. Every grape and region seemed to be covered, so we narrowed it down to North Fork, Long Island and chose a tasty white.|Overall, we had a good time at a wonderfully atmospheric hotel and would happily stay again.
